Viewing Station (2019), multimedia installation

This video installation at the degree show is an invitation to physically engage in the act of ‘seeing’, to see with me and within me: the short films are the result of stream-of-consciousness animations towards the end of the course. Work made during the MA was used as props for the animations.

The design of the furniture to which the cinema boxes are attached mimics the artist’s studio. (A small wink to the trope of interior design as a manifestation of the self.) This introverted set-up emphasises the most essential of artists’ activities: observing and thinking.

Common Ground (2019), projected image, (h) 170 x (w) 70cm

A contemporary momento mori. In Europe we have traditionally buried our most valued, or most powerful, members of society in our churches. This artist’s tomb re-enacts this custom in which the gallery now represents our modern hallowed ground. The grave and the memory of the buried person is triggered every time a visitor walks over the grave and through the projector beam.

This installation invites the public to look at time. Our allotted time is all we have. The process of living includes a deep sense of urgency, choices, missed opportunities, and the chasing of dreams. Meanwhile, the Time Wheeler wheels the time.

#Banner (2018),

multimedia installation

(h) 200 x (w) 110 x (d) 35 cm

#Banner was made as a reaction to the call for ‘Safe Spaces’ for academic debate by students in universities in the US and the UK. The work has the shape of a banner, and is accompanied with a trumpet and keys, because (however good the intentions) a Safe Space is never neutral and has an implicit power all of its own.

To allow others to determine the parameters of debate is to hand over your keys. The banner is a medieval device; the hashtag serves the same purpose. A motion detector lights up the masks when activated.
